Vast Painting Guide Ep. 4: The Warlock
Episode 4 of the Vast: The Mysterious Manor painting series, covering how I painted the Warlock with steel non-metallic metal on the staff and a freehand sigil design.
Steps
- 1 Prime the miniature black, then spray white primer from above to zenithal-map where the highlights will go.
- 2 Paint the face completely first, since it's tucked under the hat and easy to mess up later: base coat the skin with Huldra Blue.
- 3 Base coat the underside of the hat with Black Grey and the hair with Sky Grey.
- 4 Paint the eyes with a Chink Orange and Orcish Dermis mix, building the highlight toward pure Orcish Dermis over several layers, then ink in the pupils with a fine micron pen.
- 5 Highlight the face by mixing Ivory into Huldra Blue on the nose, ears, cheekbones and forehead, and highlight the hair with Ivory mixed into Sky Grey.
- 6 Base coat the rest of the miniature: Rakarth Flesh on the sleeve cuffs and hat wrap, Temple Guard Blue on the shirt, and Huldra Blue again on the spellbook.
- 7 Base coat the gloves, boots, and orange checker diamonds with Chink Orange, and the remaining diamonds with Temple Guard Blue.
- 8 Base coat the pants, belt, and spellbook pages with Iraqi Sand, and the hat, cloak, and remaining shield squares with Miskatonic Grey.
- 9 Base coat the pouches and furry waist piece with Rakarth Flesh, and the wristbands with Black Grey to set up the non-metallic metal later.
- 10 Highlight the fur, pouches, and hat wrap with Rakarth Flesh mixed with Ivory.
- 11 Shade the fur with Nuln Oil, the spellbook pages with Seraphim Sepia, and the belt with Agrax Earthshade.
- 12 Highlight the hat, cloak, and shield grays with Sky Grey mixed with Ivory, and the pants and belt texture with Iraqi Sand mixed with Ivory.
- 13 Highlight the orange diamonds with Chink Orange mixed with more Orcish Dermis, the gloves and boots with Chink Orange mixed with Iraqi Sand for a dusty look, and the blue tunic with Temple Guard Blue mixed with Sky Grey.
- 14 Dark-line the whole miniature with diluted Black Ink to sharpen the seams and recesses for a hand-drawn, cartoon look.
- 15 Touch up the hair highlights with pure White, then freehand two spell icons onto the book pages with Hull Red thinned in Liquitex Flow Aid, filling in details with Iraqi Sand.
- 16 Paint non-metallic steel on the wristbands and belt buckle: build a gradient from Black Grey through mid-grey to White, then edge-highlight with the lightest tone.
- 17 Shade the hair with a wash of Apothecary White contrast paint, and dab Fuegan Orange onto worn and torn creases in the grey fabric.
- 18 Paint the round base with Mechanicus Standard Grey and the rim with pure Black.
