Painting HeroQuest: Episode 11 - SLAP CHOP Painting the Goblins
In this video I show you the “Slap Chop” method of speed-painting the Goblins from the 2021 version of HeroQuest by Avalon Hill, including the Kellar’s Keep expansion and Mythic Tier bonus sculpts.
Steps
- 1 Give every miniature a white dry brush over the zenithal prime first — the "Slap Chop" base that lets the one-coat speed paints and contrast paints read properly.
- 2 Clean up any mold lines missed before priming by scraping them with a hobby knife and sanding smooth, then re-prime and re-drybrush just those spots.
- 3 Base-coat small fur tufts poking from gloves and boots with Apothecary White, and the teeth — plus the bone helmet on the alternate sculpts — with Pallid Bone.
- 4 Vary the skin tone across the goblins: Ghillie Dew for the most artwork-accurate look, Charming Chartreuse for a yellower Lord-of-the-Rings-style goblin, Nuclear Sunrise for an orange goblin, and Royal Robes for a few blue-skinned goblins.
- 5 Paint cloaks, hand wraps, and some clothing with Grim Black for a stealthy look, and use it on one alternate sculpt's headpiece fur as well.
- 6 Paint other goblins' clothing with Fire Drake, and the other furry headdress plus more clothing with Ruddy Fur.
- 7 Base-coat all the leather — belts, straps, and leg wraps — with Satchel Brown.
- 8 Paint the bases with Waaagh! Flesh, building up a couple of coats for coverage.
- 9 Base-coat all the metal weapons and armor with a 50/50 mix of Broadsword Silver and Payne's Grey ink.
- 10 Thin Slaughter Red with speed paint medium and glaze it onto the ear and nose tips for a touch of redness, and use the same mix for the sneaky goblins' tongues.
- 11 Pick out gold details — earrings, jewelry, the female goblins' necklaces, sword handguards, and chest medallions — with Retributor Armour.
- 12 Paint the eye whites, dangly earrings, the goblins' bone-colored hat sections, the sneaky goblins' hood stitching, and a few bony teeth on the belt with Offwhite, and touch up any stray fur color at the same time.
- 13 Add pupils to the dried eye whites with a black Micron pen.
- 14 Tone down the Offwhite areas, aside from the eyes, with a coat of Pallid Bone.
- 15 Wash the sneaky goblins' stitching with Seraphim Sepia and the dangly earrings with Nuln Oil.
- 16 Highlight the metal edges and blades roughly with Vallejo Gunmetal for variety, without worrying about smooth blending.
