Painting HeroQuest: Episode 10 - The Druid
In this video I show you step-by-step how to paint the Druid hero character from the Mythic Tier of the 2021 version of HeroQuest by Avalon Hill.
Steps
- 1 Prime with a zenithal white spray from the front, then base coat the skin with Dark Fleshtone for a deep skin tone, covering the vine details on the legs and her bare back for now.
- 2 Base coat the leaves around her waist, the leaf bikini top, and the armband with Deathworld Forest.
- 3 Mix Eldandil Violet with black for a near-black purple and base coat the hair with it, using the purple only to add contrast rather than to read as purple.
- 4 Base coat the staff with Peanut Butter.
- 5 Base coat the flower in her hair with Evil Sunz Scarlet, then thin it into a glaze and brush top-to-bottom over the lower leaves in several coats to build a red gradient at the base of the skirt leaves.
- 6 Glaze thinned Deathworld Forest bottom-to-top over the transition to smooth the blend between green and red, then base coat the rope ties holding her clothes with Buff, the leg vines and hair thorns with Skrag Brown, and the satchel with Charred Brown.
- 7 Highlight the leaves by mixing Toxic Waste Green into Deathworld Forest and applying it to the upper portions of the waist and chest leaves in a couple of passes.
- 8 Highlight the flower with Wild Rider Red, push a thinned highlight into the leaf tips with a little Moon Yellow mixed in for extra brightness, and highlight the leg and hair thorns by mixing yellow into the Skrag Brown base.
- 9 Wash the leaf recesses and veins with Athonian Camoshade, wetting the area with water first to keep the wash controlled.
- 10 Paint the eye whites with Ivory, wash all the rope ties, the hair flowers, and the entire staff with Agrax Earthshade, then fill the pupils with Decay Black.
- 11 Paint the tiger-transformed hand with Tau Light Ochre, then highlight the staff's carved wood grain by mixing Ivory into the Peanut Butter base and tracing the sculpted grain lines.
- 12 Highlight the hair by mixing Braineater Azure into the violet-and-black base on raised, upward-facing areas, then push it further in two more stages by adding Ivory and a touch more black to keep it from reading too purple.
- 13 Once dry, coat the staff in Brown Ink and the hair in Black Ink, wicking off excess, then use thinned black paint to draw fine linework between fabric transitions and around the vines and ropes, and to draw stripes on the tiger hand.
- 14 Highlight the skin by mixing Dark Fleshtone with Ungor Flesh, building it up in two more stages focused on the nose, forehead, cheekbones, chin, shoulders, and back, then glaze thinned Dark Fleshtone back in to smooth the transitions.
- 15 Shade the tiger claw and hair ornaments with Fuegan Orange and Casandora Yellow shade, paint the claws pure black, then highlight the claw's fur with Tau Light Ochre.
- 16 Re-highlight the flower with Evil Sunz Scarlet, mix Evil Sunz Scarlet with Ungor Flesh for the lips, paint the base with Hull Red, highlight the satchel with Charred Brown mixed with Tau Light Ochre, and optionally freehand tribal-style skin markings with Celestra Grey.
