Making a Glowing Fireplace for HeroQuest

In this video I show you how I made the fireplace furniture piece from the 2021 version of HeroQuest actually glow, using resin casting and a flickering LED tea light.

Steps

  1. 1 Make a two-part silicone mold of the HeroQuest fireplace piece.
  2. 2 Cast a clear replacement fireplace piece in the mold using clear epoxy resin, leaving a hollow cavity to hide the light source.
  3. 3 Carve out a recess in the base of the fireplace to fit a flickering LED tea light.
  4. 4 Build up layers of UV resin over the coals and log details for a glossy, glass-like ember texture, curing each layer under UV light.
  5. 5 Seat the flickering tea light inside the fireplace base so its light shines up through the cast resin, then glue the fireplace pieces back together.
  6. 6 Test the finished piece with the tea light running to check that the glow reads convincingly as flickering firelight.
