Steps

  1. 1 Mix a desaturated red for the ruffled collar and shirt from Bloody Red, Goblin Green, and a touch of Warlord Purple; paint the neck ruffles and the inside of the collar.
  2. 2 Mix a tiny bit of blue into black for his black-leather clothing; cover all his clothes except the hands, head, and cape, then paint the red sleeve accents in the same red mix used on the collar.
  3. 3 Mix a light blue for the cape from Stonewall Grey and Magic Blue, darkened slightly with black; paint the whole cape (avoiding the red collar) and the upper part of the collar.
  4. 4 Mix Stonewall Grey with a little black, about 3:1, for the exposed bone on his hands and head.
  5. 5 Mix a dark leather color from brown and black for the straps on his outfit, and paint the trim areas with pure Stonewall Grey.
  6. 6 Paint all the metal — the shoulder armor, boot armor, and metal strap fittings — with Chainmail Silver.
  7. 7 Wash the entire miniature except the cape with Black Wash, and paint the base's runes and designs white.
  8. 8 Dry-brush the bone areas with Stonewall Grey, then a second pass mixing in Dead White for a brighter highlight on the head and fingers.
  9. 9 Highlight the black leather clothing with the original black-and-blue mix lightened with more Stonewall Grey and white, building up over three progressively smaller passes.
  10. 10 Touch up the metal highlights by reapplying Chainmail Silver over a smaller area, and highlight the trim with pure Stonewall Grey.
  11. 11 Highlight the red clothing by mixing more Bloody Red into the original red mix, picking out the raised areas, the inside of the collar, and the forearms.
  12. 12 Detail the face: fill the eye sockets, nose holes, and mouth line with pure black, then dot Dead White in the center of each eye for a glow.
  13. 13 Heavily thin some blue paint and flood it into the eye sockets, letting it spill slightly outside them for a glowing light effect.
  14. 14 Highlight the cape by lightening the base cape color with Stonewall Grey on the tops of the folds, building up over several layers with more white (adding a touch more blue if it desaturates), each pass covering a smaller area.
  15. 15 Mix a custom wash from Black Wash, water, a drop of blue, and a drop of red for a dark bluish-purple; apply it over the entire cape to deepen shadows and blend the highlights.
  16. 16 Paint the top of the base black, then dry-brush black over the white recessed area so it only picks up on the raised surfaces, and paint the base rim black.
  17. 17 Finish the face: paint the forehead ornament with Glorious Gold, then paint its gem black with a thinned Warlord Purple wash on the lower half and a white highlight dot on top (optional).
