How "Speedy" are Army Painter SPEED PAINTS? Tested on Blood Rage

In this video I try out The Army Painter Speed Paints to see how quickly I can paint all of the factions in Blood Rage, sharing my thoughts on the product and a few things not to do along the way.

Steps

  1. 1 Zenithal-prime all 40 miniatures with rattle cans: black overall, then white sprayed in from above (the old rattle-can primer ended up leaving a rough, hard-to-control texture on every model).
  2. 2 Base-coat the skin with a thick single coat of Peachy Flesh Speedpaint, letting it settle into the recesses on its own.
  3. 3 Speedpaint the fur cloaks — this is where the one-coat formula shines, pulling into recesses like a wash while still tinting the raised highlights.
  4. 4 Speedpaint the hair and any yellow details with Ancient Honey, which gives a vibrant highlight with a naturally dark shadow in the recesses.
  5. 5 Speedpaint all the metal parts with Broadsword Silver — one of the metallic Speedpaints, though its shading contrast is much less pronounced than the non-metallics.
  6. 6 Paint each faction's boat: a yellowish brown for the hull, and each sail in that faction's color.
  7. 7 Paint the ocean base with Raging Sea.
  8. 8 Dry-brush Evil Sunz Scarlet over the shields to make details that got lost under the one-coat Speedpaint pop more.
  9. 9 Dry-brush Averland Sunset over the yellow areas to bring the designs back out where the black primer had swallowed them.
  10. 10 Dry-brush Necron Compound over all the metal areas, since the Broadsword Silver had come out too dark on its own.
  11. 11 Paint the boat base rims and the entire bases of all the faction miniatures in solid black.

    Speedpaint for the hair and other yellow details

  • Averland Sunset (Citadel)

    Drybrushed over yellow areas to bring the designs back out

  • Broadsword Silver (Army Painter)

    Speedpaint base coat for all the metal parts

  • Evil Sunz Scarlet (Citadel)

    Drybrushed over the shields to make their details pop

  • Necron Compound (Citadel)

    Drybrushed over the metal areas to lighten the too-dark Broadsword Silver base

  • Peachy Flesh (Army Painter)

    Speedpaint base coat for the skin

  • Raging Sea (Army Painter)

    Base coat for the ocean bases
